A Building on the Move

On Tuesday September 23, the process of relocating a commercial bank building from Jenkins to Baxter began. We needed to coordinate adjusting our power lines to allow for a 30 mile move of a commercial bank building. The route began in Jenkins, heading South on Hwy 371 to Pequot Lakes, East onto CR 11 to Breezy Point, South onto CR 4 through Merrifield, West onto CR 49, then South onto Hwy 371 and finally East to Clearwater Road and to its new home in Baxter.

The move took 2 days, crossed our lines 40 times and power was interrupted to 280 members at different times throughout the process. We did as much back feeding of lines as possible to keep the interruptions to a minimum.

We received a timetable from the movers to schedule the power interruptions to our members, but due to traffic and other issues, some of the announced interruption times were delayed and may have lasted longer than anticipated.

The bank was 33 feet tall loaded on the trailer. Depending on the structure of the pole and the size of the conductors, power lines would need to be either raised or dropped for the bank to go by. In order to raise the power lines, the crew and truck would be positioned away from the bank moving through and lift the power lines up to 37 feet allowing the bank to clear safely. In some instances it was required to have crews and trucks positioned on both sides of the road to gain clearance.

To drop the power lines to allow the bank to pass, our crews would de-energize the line, remove it from the main line pole with a hoist, drop it down and roll it up on the side of road while the bank went by.  Our crews then reattached and re-energized the power lines.

We were pleased the move went smoothly and safely. Thank you to our staff for the many hours of coordination and preparation, and to our line crews who made it all look effortless.
